Digital Lifestyle | "PORT OUT, PORT IN" in the Philippines Underway on September 2021

Telecommunications Connectivity Incorporated (TCI) logo

The three (3) big telecommunications companies in the Philippines have collaborated to ensure the mobile network portability will be possible in the country. The long dream of having your mobile numbers permanent even you switch networks will happen very soon sometime in September 2021. With this recent development, hence, Telecommunications Connectivity Incorporated is formed.

Mobile Number Portability is not a new scheme in the world, it is available in Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan. Soon, it will come to a reality in the Philippines, with the help of Syniverse as the technical support. "PORT OUT and PORT IN" will be a new practice among mobile telco subscribers, when they opt to change their network to transfer to another. Yes, it will encourage the telcos to be more competitive with their services so that it can entice subscribers to port in.

TCI expects around a million subscribers to have port out and port in transactions in its first year of operations, but who knows the real numbers yet as they are about to start by September 2021.

Good thing that to avail of the services for mobile number portability, it is free! The process will include that you ask a 9-digit Unique Subscriber Code (USC) from your current network and show it to your prospect new network. It will take 48 hours (that's fast!) so that the switch will happen. After opting to port out/port in, you will have to wait for another 60 days to avail port out/port in if you wish to switch again.

The good thing about the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) it is already a law under Republic Act 11202. Thus, to comply with it is a must. It will really give the Filipinos an option of which telco service provider they'll have to enjoy. With the port in and port out to networks, subscribers will enjoy the promos of respective networks: DITO, Globe and Smart. It can also be enjoyed a transfer of prepaid to postpaid, postpaid to prepaid, postpaid to postpaid and prepaid to prepaid. However, A FRIENDLY REMINDER, among the postpaid subscribers, it will be possible after completing the liabilities to the concurrent network.

This is indeed a gamechanger in the industry of telecommunications. As this will be realized, changing of numbers will be less and hopefully will also attribute to personal identification in the future in the Philippines. I wish the TCI all the best with this. As what TCI GM, Ms. Melanie Manuel have said, "IN UNITY, THERE IS CONNECTIVITY".

Lifestyle | DITO Expanding Reach with New Promo

Newest DITO Promo

DITO Telecommunity which started commercial operations last March 8, 2021 is now expanding its reach in the northern area, to wit: select areas in Central Luzon and South Luzon. With its initial rollout in the select areas in Mindanao and Visayas, it presented a promo of P199 unlimited data and unlimited Dito to Dito calls and texts.

I have availed their initial promo here in Mindanao and able to enjoy their faster speed for internet and I can rely on it as primary source of data.

Check out my vlog at JoyoftheWorld as I compared speed test of existing mobile data providers. Here's the link: https://youtu.be/SwUw6Ptm1rs

However, I also have observed that there are still some blank spots in the city wherein there is no data while riding a car in Sasa, Davao City, yet there is network signal but low data reception. On the other hand, I am surprised that I have reliable mobile data even at villages nearby Ecoland, Matina Pangi and even at Jade Valley. I am fully aware that DITO Telecommunity, as a new player in the telecommunications industry, their infrastructure is still expanding but is already giving me a good service - a reliable one.

The newest promo offered by DITO is still at P199. There is data cap at 25GB but you can have unlimited text to all networks, unlimited calls to DITO subscribers and 300 minutes call to other networks. The promo will be good from April 16-30, 2021 that I will also grab as my initial subscription ends tomorrow, April 17. This will also test me how far my 25GB can serve me with frequent gaming and YouTube viewing. The promo will really be a game changer if it becomes a postpaid offering, but I understand that it is just a promo. Let's see it in the coming months as their physical stores are yet to be finished in some malls in Davao City and other areas.

I am wishing success for the third telco even on this challenging times.

Lifestyle: Education Must Adopt Digital Age for the Future

The recent challenges of the pandemic has given many realizations among people. The digital adoption of many institutions has been an option to continue services. The academic institutions are no excuse with these adaptations. With this need, there is really a great need for a reliable connectivity may it be mobile or wired so that there will be no disruptions of digital services.

So, here's a story from Globe that highlights the importance of connectivity, see below:

The Importance of Connectivity to Your School’s Digital Future

Find the key strategies these schools used with Globe that kept their students connected to higher learning.

The future of education continues to head towards the digital fast lane. With the pandemic's current progress, online connectivity has become essential. To help address this immediate concern, Globe presents E-Skwela online learning sessions. The webinar series presents learning technologies and tools and their integration into the school systems. It is made for administrators, key decision-makers, and faculty caught in the digital transition. Through E-Skwela, administrators can find critical ways to ensure educational continuity for years to come.

In the latest webinar on Connectivity and Learning: The Prepaid WiFi for Education and Fixed Broadband Experience, key speakers from Ateneo de Davao University and Coronado School of Quezon City talk in detail about how they coped with continuing education through the initial stages of the pandemic. They shared the strategies they used to rise above the crisis and pushed through.

See how your school, too, can prioritize your digital shift starting with connectivity through these top school's stories and tips.

Tip #1: Gather Data, Learn New Perspectives, & Move Quickly

Ateneo de Davao's Executive Vice President Jeremy "Bong" S. Eliab recounted their school's journey in setting up distance learning with Globe’s Home Prepaid WiFi.

At the start of lockdown implementation, Ateneo de Davao University's current President Father Joel E. Tabora SJ made the bold decision to continue operations. Through one of their unique campus traditions "Pakighinabi" and data collection, the school used information on factors, possible concerns, and solutions needed for the online shift. They gathered the opinions of students, parents, faculty, and stakeholders alike.

"Even for us as educators, we have had to shift our paradigm from the usual traditional lecture to online interactions, and it entails a lot of paradigm shifts and turning away from old traditions," shared Mr. Eliab.

Being well informed on all these factors allowed the Ateneo to develop an action plan hand-in-hand with Globe, the local government, and even the military force to bring Home Prepaid WiFi Kits to 15,000 students and 1,500 faculty across Mindanao.

Mr. Eliab also notes the collaboration it took within the faculty to ensure the quality of education didn't dip during the online shift. They offered digital training to all the faculty and staff along with learning through Globe.

"It's a symbiosis between the young, tech-savvy faculty and seasoned faculty to deliver classes online," Mr. Eliab said, stressing the importance of continuous learning even for educators to cope in the new normal.

Tip #2: Find The Right Partnerships & be Open to Collaborations

Vice President of Coronado School of Quezon City, Networking Engineer, and Educational Technology Professional Noel M. Coronado shares his belief that being accountable and supportive as a community is essential to the digital transformation for education.

"We have to be there every step of the way; which is what we have also experienced with the customer service and assistance extended by Globe. In the same way, we have to be there for our teachers and reassure them. The teachers should feel confident that both the partners and the school are supporting them in teaching and delivering quality education to their students," Mr. Coronado said.

He firmly believed that after assessing the situation, and with his colleague's referral, Globe will have exactly what they needed to stabilize connection in their vicinity.

"We, the management, are responsible for the direction of the school but we would also like to ask your help in implementing it," Mr. Coronado shared, conveying that they won't be able to shift quickly if they didn't consult with industry leaders for the help they need.

With Globe, schools can continue providing their students globally competitive education ready for the 21st century, offering topnotch connectivity, first-hand guidance, and implementation support. Globe's prepaid WiFi and fixed broadband, partnered with reliable assistance, can help your school go through the online transformation it deserves.

The potential in the Philippines for the digital adaptation is still not yet totally harnessed. I hope that things will be better in the coming days and for sure, the connectivity will really be at par with the first world countries.

Digital Lifestyle | Globe Telecom Network Improvement Creates Better Services on Holidays

Globe Telecom has taken a big leap when they have taken the challenge posed by the government of improving services before the year ends, which is also the same with other competitor networks. There has been significant improvement from the network like in my experience, my 3G signal to 4G. There has been an interesting roll out of 5G technology already and Davao City in Mindanao is one of the first to experience it.

With the development that Globe has been doing in the recent months and its increased number of towers put all around the country, the network is with high confidence of making this year a #FirstWorldNetwork. Here's the story of the holiday's service traffic:

Globe keeps family traditions alive on network service enhancements; gears up for robust #FirstWorldNetwork in 2021!

Globe’s vigorous network builds and expansion initiatives paved the way for valued family traditions to continue during the holiday season despite the pandemic which curbed face-to-face interactions.

Virtual get-togethers, online masses, concerts, distance learning, popular online sale events like 12.12 among others, were supported by Globe’s improved network infrastructure. Based on the company's internal data, internet traffic steadily increased from November until the end of the year with a significant spike on customers’ usage during Christmas Day and New Year’s Day especially on Facebook Live and Video.

Globe monitored mobile internet traffic and noted spikes during Christmas Day and New Year’s Day by at least 12% as compared to customers’ usage in the previous month.

For the rest of 2020, popular virtual interactive apps like Zoom and Skype were  consistently being used during weekdays, slightly dropping on weekends suggesting that more customers use these apps for work from home and distance learning or online class requirements.

Globe's network infrastructure got a long-needed boost through the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act, and the Joint Memorandum Circular 01 of the Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA), DILG and other concerned agencies. The enabling laws effectively shortened the permitting process allowing  Globe to build 1,300 new cell sites this year and upgraded 11,529 sites to 4G/LTE,  resulting in faster, unimpeded connections.

Areas needing connectivity the most were being addressed with new site builds including Lanao del Sur, Sultan Kudarat, Antique, Iloilo, Leyte, Palawan, Aklan, Maguindanao, Cotabato, Misamis Oriental, and Davao de Oro.  On the other hand, site upgrades are being done extensively across all areas where Globe has existing network coverage.  The rigorous site upgrades are paving the way for 4G LTE to be the new standard of mobile internet connectivity.

Globe also built 600,000 broadband lines in 2020, a 55% improvement from 2019 helping customers adjust to the new normal of work-from-home and online learning.

The 5th generation mobile network or 5G now covers 80% of urban Metro Manila. It is also available in 17 key cities nationwide through 1,031 sites.

“As we go forward and upwards, Globe is committed to advance and improve its network infrastructure. While the new sites will need time to be built and fired up, the recent unimpeded permitting process has proven to be the much-needed catalyst for the telco industry.  Improving the country's state of connectivity and internet speed is a continuing effort that requires both public and private sector support,” said Globe’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Ernest Cu.

These improvements in call, text and data services have resulted in positive customer feedback and confirmed by international third party analytical firms Ookla® and Opensignal.

Ookla®, the global leader in internet testing and analysis, said Globe has the “most consistent 4G network” in 13 out of 17 regions based on its Q3 2020 data. In terms of scores, Ookla®’s quarterly data showed that in terms of mobile Consistency Score™, Globe’s Consistency Score in the Philippines improved to 56.83% in Q3 2020 from 48.56% in Q2 2020*. Regional Consistency Score likewise improved across all Philippine regions, registering increases as high as 13.4 PPTs (percentage points), with scores ranging from 31% and 62% in Q3 2020, including high density and typhoon-prone areas like Central Luzon, Bicol, and Eastern Visayas. The area with the highest consistency score based on "All Technology" is Metro Manila at 61.68%

Mobile Consistency Score™ measures the number of incidences (viewed as a percentage) of a provider's samples equal or exceeds both a download threshold of 5 Mbps and an upload threshold of 1 Mbps.

#FirstWorldNetwork in 2021

With the new year upon us, Globe is committed to provide customers with better data and faster internet speed whenever they need it, wherever they are.

Globe is ramping up investments, targeting more than 2.5x the number of fiber to homes in 2020.

For mobile, the telco will build 2,000 sites including in-building solutions, partnerships with independent tower companies and new cell sites.  Globe is looking at making 4G LTE as the new standard of mobile services.

Globe will likewise continue to expand its 5G footprint as more 5G-capable devices enter the market.  The aggressive roll out of 5G will happen this year in  more cities and municipalities nationwide.

With a better data network in place, voice services will likewise improve by providing  VoLTE (Voice Over LTE) and VoWiFi (Voice Over WiFi), to deliver clearer voice calls, faster call setup and near zero dropped calls. VoLTE and VoWiFi was initially being rolled out in NCR and in other parts of Luzon, and will be implemented in Visayas and Mindanao this year.

So, there you go, there's much that Globe Telecom is going to implement this year. There are improvements already and more to come in the coming months. With these things happening, the dream of our country's telecommunication to have at par with first world nation's connectivity is nearing reach.

Areas hit by Typhoon Rolly that are covered are: NCR (1st district - City of Manila, 2nd District, 4th District), Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Marinduque, Masbate, and Western Samar.

Additional areas covered due to Typhoon Ulysses are: Aurora, Bataan, Benguet, Bulacan, La Union (Southern portion), Masbate (Burias and Ticao Islands), Metro Manila, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya (Central and Southern portions), Occidental Mindoro (Northern portion), Oriental Mindoro (Northern portion), Pampanga, Pangasinan,  Quirino, Tarlac, and Zambales.

Globe At Home is sending out these offers to affected customers only, noting the importance of communications during such trying times.  Aside from access to reliable voice communications,  people also need data to get information about what is happening around them and stay in touch with  friends and loved ones.

These are part of Globe’s relief and recovery efforts to help those who are most vulnerable and severely affected by the calamity.

Globe first to restore mobile and data services in Tiwi, Albay

Globe is the first telco to have successfully restored its voice, text and internet services in Tiwi, Albay.

The company’s network operations team has been working shifts, and trekking land and sea to ensure that mobile and data services are restored, to provide for its customers’ critical communication needs in areas severely affected by Typhoon Rolly.

Globe is exerting all means possible to complete restoration of services in remaining severely affected areas in Catanduanes, Albay, and Camarines Sur.

As telecommunications play a big part of our lives now due to the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, telecommunications is needed to be restored right away. Many needs it to communicate updates, continue the learning model of online class, and among others. Thus, all efforts of all telecommunications companies available are highly appreciated!

Digital Lifestyle: Globe Network Upgrade on Full Steam!

During the SONA 2020 of President Rodrigo R. Duterte, it has urged the existing telcos to have services improved and reached many with satisfaction. It has become a challenge which Globe Telecom openly accepted. Among the steps they have taken are here:

Globe has secured at least 252 permits from local government units to complement its target to build more cell towers in key areas of the country in the last quarter of the year.

The provinces of Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, Rizal, Bulacan, Isabela, South Cotabato, Pangasinan, Misamis Oriental and Bataan gave the most permits among the provinces while Manila, Mandaluyong and Paranaque topped the cities for October.

“We are always grateful for the support of these LGUs that recognize our network expansion efforts because at the end of the day, their constituents will be the main beneficiaries of better connectivity and wider coverage,” said Joel Agustin, Globe Senior Vice President for Program Delivery, Network Technical Group.

Cavite issued 30 permits, Batangas gave 20 while Laguna added 19 more. Rizal, Bulacan, Isabela, South Cotabato, Pangasinan, Misamis Occidental, Bataan and Cagayan granted at least five permits or more.

Manila topped the list of cities with 12 permits, followed by Mandaluyong with 10 and Paranaque with 6.

Overall, Globe gained at least one permit in 27 provinces and 25 cities to include South Cotabato, Misamis Occidental, Guimaras, Antique, Agusan del Sur, Abra, Daangbantayan and Minglanilla in Cebu to mention a few.

The company has laid out a 3-pronged strategy for its network upgrades and expansion, which includes aggressive cell site builds; upgrading its cell sites to 4G/LTE using many different frequencies; and fast tracking the fiberization of Filipino homes nationwide.

Globe supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically UNSDG No. 9 which emphasizes the roles of infrastructure and innovation as crucial drivers of economic growth and development. Globe is committed to upholding the 10 United Nations Global Compact principles and 10 UN SDGs.

Indeed, with these steps, we are seeing a brighter future in the industry of telecommunications with faster internet connection. Even with an upcoming third telco, that will also do the same services, Globe Network will still be competitive and with constant upgrade.
