Event | All Set for the Visit Davao Summer Festival 2018

Davao Region is now up for a very wide and more than 2-month long festival - the VISIT DAVAO SUMMER FESTIVAL!
Mr. Lizada (center) with the execom and Gov. Uy
Visit Davao Summer Festival is an initiative of Mr. Benjie Lizada, together with the Department of Toursim Davao Region headed by Mr. Antonio Fernando Blanco, in participation with the different local government units and partners in Davao Region. It has a lot of summer activities that people can enjoy from different sites of the region such as in Davao City, Island Garden City of Samal, Tagum City, Mati City, Davao del Norte Province, Compostela Valley Province (with the Municipalities of Maco, Mabini, and Maragusan), Davao Oriental Province (with the Municipalities of Governor Generoso and San Isidro), and Municipality of Sta. Cruz. A total of 35 activities are to be expected that cover much of summer sport activities, travel, shopping, arts, pet shows, and nature appreciation. This region-wide festival starts from April 15-June 30, 2018.

This is such an exciting festival as it features the region more of sporting activities from highlands to islands. Yes, more of sport activities from a vertical, going to the mountains or diving the deep blue sea, and horizontal races and extreme sports - name it, you’ll gonna experience it in Davao Region. Hopefully, this will bring the region as a major sporting hub in the country especially that some events are being participated not only by the locals but with some international competitors, too.

Wayback, it is VISIT DAVAO FUN SALE! It is situated and focused only in Davao City with summer shopping sale and fun activities. With the Visit Davao Summer Festival 2018, it is wider and reaching more cities and provinces. That’s a goal of a One Davao Festival!
Show a Signed MOA with Execom and Sponsors

Inking the Memorandum of Agreement between partner local government units with the executive committee, and sponsors with executive committee is really the start of making the Visit Davao Summer Festival 2018 on the roll! Hoping to see you guys around, either shopping or sporting! ;-)

For more information about the festival as well as the roster of events, you can reach them at this LINK!

Travel | Enjoy Batanes on a Shoestring Budget

It is in the bucketlist of many Filipinos to visit and spend a vacation in the northernmost part of the country, Batanes group of islands. It is because the place is very clean, green and arguably one of the best places to be in the Philippines! Indeed, as experienced, it is really what I expected!

Now, I will share to you how I manage to bring only two thousand pesos (P2000) pocket money for the trip. I will also share to you how I am able to afford cheaper airfare for this trip. I will also share how I survived the 4 days and 3 nights vacation in the island. :-)

First things first, find the cheapest fare and if not the cheapest, at least the cheaper rates. In the market, Skyjet Air and Philippine Airlines fly to this northernmost territory. As of my observation, one-way ticket on both airlines will not go much less five thousand pesos (P5000) on a regular fare with other fees and taxes. The best thing to do to get a chance of their promo fare is to take chances on travel exposition. I got my roundtrip ticket for six thousand one hundred ninety-one pesos (P6191) during a travel expo. It may not be the cheapest but at least cheaper with 2 months before departure date. It is not a peak season visit and it is a risk booking dates during wet season, however, just pray for the best! ;-)

Next, try to search for tours in Batanes. There are blogs which are readily available for your guide to Batanes. I tried to compare a tour package for 3 days and a contact in the island for a tour, a tour package will cost you less. I got mine for four thousand nine hundred ninety-nine pesos (P4999) under BISUMI Tours. It is a promo rate for 3 days that include North Batan, Sabtang Island and South Batan. Aside from that, there is a complimentary lunch (Ivatan food) during the tour, refreshments, van transit and boat fees, other tour fees, a tour guide who can also take beautiful photos, tour bag, airport transfers and souvenir items! Where can you find anything as such? Well, thanks to Sir Ryan of BISUMI Tours you can contact him at these numbers 09989885898 or find their page - BISUMI Tours. Good thing also that they have an attached contact for cheap, humble and decent fan accommodation that amounts to five hundred pesos (P500) each night and for 3 nights, I paid one thousand five hundred pesos (P1500). By the way, BISUMI stands for Basco, Itbayat, Sabtang, Uyugan, Mahatao and Ivana which represents the municipalities of Batanes.

Alright, what other fees that you need to prepare? Upon arrival at Basco Airport, each guest has to pay an environmental fee of three hundred fifty pesos (P350) which is intended for the island's preservation and building of restrooms similar to stone houses near to prime tourist destinations. Prepare a your budget of one thousand five hundred pesos (P1500) for food (breakfast, dinner and snacks) and for more souvenir. Then, prepare one hundred fifty pesos (P150) for bike and Ivatan weather protection attire (vakul for ladies and kaayo for the gents) rental.

Total costs:
P6191 - roundtrip airfare (via SkyJet)
P6499 - 3 days tour c/o BISUMI Tours and 3 nights accommodation
P450 - 3 days breakfast
P965 - 3 nights dinner
P20 - Kanayi rental
P40 - Bike rental (P20/hr)
P350 - Environmental fee
P500 - Souvenir and food items
Total of P14665, not bad for a 4 days 3 nights Batanes Tour!

Next posts about Batanes will be the Tours and Food!

Travel | Enjoying Spring in Seoul: Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and Insadong

DMZ Landmark at Paju, South Korea
A different way to experience South Korea is to visit the Demilitarized Zone or known as the DMZ. It is located at Paju, Northeastern part of South Korea. It is one of the boundaries of the North and South Korea wherein during the Korean War, the place is one of the battlefields. This place is witness to the pain of the Korean War and the national conflict. Many of its relics and monuments serve as remembrance of the past and the strive for an everlasting peace among the countries.

A day prior the tour, I have asked my friend to book me for the tour and gladly i am reserved. It costs around KRW 46,000. The pick up area for a joiner like me is near the Hongik University Station bus stop. There is excitement and anxiousness in my mind knowing that I will be visiting the boundary of North and South Korea. Some question like, "Am i really going to this? Am i really in the right state of mind visiting the place? Will I still go back home safely?", afloat in my mind. It is because some blog posts say that there are restrictions in what to wear and how to behave when in the DMZ - since North Koreans might be taking some photos of tourists from afar or by a drone and will show to their citizens how people dress outside their country. Anyways, that is part of the adventure when in South Korea!

From Hongik University Station to DMZ is almost an hour tour bus ride. While I am containing my excitement towards our destination, I am still looking for those late bloomer sakura through the window... Hoping to see either white or pinkish sakura!

Bell Peace
Anyways, first stop is at the DMZ ticket booth and tourist information center. Tourists are given only a few minutes to take some photos and tour around the area with a constant reminder of wearing the tour ID. In the vicinity, you will see the Bell of Peace. It is a very huge bell that represents peace of mankind and unification of the Korean nation in the new millennium.

DMZ Memories Monument
Steam Locomotive
Just some meters away, you will see a Steam Locomotive at Jangdan Station of the Gyeongui Line. It is such a huge old steam-run train derailed by explosions of bomb, aside from that, the train is bathed by traces of explosion - it is so tragic to imagine.
Freedom Bridge
Then, a few meters away again, you will see the Bridge of Freedom. It is a wooden bridge made to free more than 10,000 prisoners. At the end of this bridge, you will see some flags or some cloth tied that symbolizes territory and grief of the area during the Korean War.

After few minutes, we get back to the tour bus the we proceed to our closest distance to North Korea. We pass through the Imjingang Railroad Bridge towards the DMZ observatory and the 3rd tunnel.

Rail Bridge of Imjingang
Dora Observatory
It is said that the North Koreans tried to dig tunnels towards Seoul. Several tunnels are discovered and one of it is the 3rd tunnel that is now part of the history and tourist attraction. Tourists are invited to watch the film showing about the tunnels and then try to walk down the tunnel which I think is a kilometer away to experience and witness some discoveries in the tunnel. Tourists are urged just to walk in their own pace with helmet on and devices kept in the lockers provided. I suggest that no claustrophobic individual will try to enter... At the end of the tunnel, you will just witness a boundary between the two Korea then back to the surface. You will feel peace and tension at the same time since there are military personnel from South Korea and also some ally armies from the USA.

Aspiration for Permanent Peace!
Dora Observatory

Never miss to have that photo opportunity with the bean like landmark at the DMZ, for me, it symbolizes mending of ties between two Korea.
The 3rd Tunnel, DMZ, Paju, South Korea
Then, we proceed to the observatory. Some young South Korean military forces are there to man the boundary. Tourists are restricted to take photos beyond a designated yellow line. There are some binoculars you can coin in to peek a view in the nearby North Korea. It is foggy then, no clear image is seen but at least I manage to seen a part of North Korea - a vast area with some industries but less to no people around.

Dorosan Station, South Korea
Dorosan Stamp
Then, we proceed to the Dorasan Station. It is a train station built that hopes for a peaceful entry from South Korea towards the capital of the North, Pyeongyang. There too, tourists can have a stamp of the Dorasan Station but please be reminded not to stamp it on your passport or face some consequences in the immigration. The place is peaceful but you know there is still internal tension between the two countries. Anyways, I am one with peace between the two and of the whole world! :-p

Sakura
Sakura
There you go, the experience is fun for a half day tour. More pleasant since I saw the sakura, some late blooming sakura in Paju!!!
Sakura Behind Me!!!
In the tour bus, different nationalities are there and glad to befriend some of them. Going back to Seoul, we take some time in a ginseng museum, you will really need not to miss it! (Sarcastic attitude!!!) Then, some new friends and I look for a place to eat lunch! We walk around Insadong and find for a spot to eat and have some shared beer. Then, after eating, tummies are full and there explore a bit in Insadong, act nuts, and ate 'poop pancake'! Such an activity for the day!!!
Lunch time!
Shopping Store in Insadong
"Poop" Pancake Stall
Yeah, I enjoyed the tour and going around with some new found friends. It is cool to be a tour joiner!
Those glasses!!!
"Poop" Pancake eating!!!
But hey, it isn't my last day in South Korea yet. I am enjoying much of the spring time. Stay put for my update and share your stories too in my avenue, www.ten7avenue.com.

Travel | Soul Searching in Seoul, South Korea

Get rid with my title...too fancy! LOL

The Philippines is a tropical country in the Southeast Asia Region. With this geographic location, the country experiences two seasons: dry (summer) and wet (rainy) seasons. A tropical person would want to experience something different such as experiencing winter, spring and fall. It has been a very familiar music in my ears that has the lyrics about these seasons 'winter, spring, summer or fall...you've got a friend'. Aside from that song, a lot of Korean television series has been an avenue to show the beauty of South Korea - a very good way to promote their place and it has been an influence for me to aspire coming to the country! However, my main drivers to go to  South Korea are some of my friends. Also, their history and culture are very interesting. Actually, it is among the places I really want to visit and of course, the visa is free for Filipinos staying below 60 days. Check the application requirements here.

There are several things I wanted to do in Seoul, South Korea:
1) Wear an traditional Korean attire or the hanbuk;
2) Visit cultural and historical places (the 5 palaces, shrine, and traditional villages);
3) See the sakura in person;
4) Visit the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ);
5) Visit their Museum;
6) Navigate in their subway system;
7) Tour around Incheon International Airport (one of the world's best);
8) Visit the romantic N Seoul Tower;
9) Shop and eat at Myeongdong Street;
10) Eat authentic Korean dishes; and
11) Visit some of their themed parks.

Those are only a few of the things I wanted to do in Seoul. Yes, just in Seoul for this tour! Yet, I am told that there are more to do especially going out Seoul and experience the natural beauty of South Korea. Oh wow, this is just the beginning of my blog about my visit in South Korea.

Tips: 1) You get free maps at the airport. Grab the opportunity to learn about the city and places to visit nearby. 2) Bringing cash for conversion is good but better have your ATM card and get some cash from an ATM at the airport once to fight conversion losses and just pay a bit of bank charges not exceeding 200 pesos. 3) Download subway navigation application and enjoy using it with your smartphone real-time even without an Internet connection.

More to come here at my avenue, www.ten7avenue.com. Enjoy!

Travel | Completed ASEAN in 3 Years

It was 2008 when I processed my passport just for the purpose of an additional identification card or document. By that year, too, when budget carrier airlines gave an opportunity to many budget travelers to travel cheaper internationally. Good thing I have my passport and I am able to avail my mother's sponsorship for the trip. Lol

I enjoy every travel I do. Experience the culture, food and mingle with people. As an ASEAN, my dream is to travel around the region's member states. There is an inviting factor such as no visa needed to travel among the member states. I want to travel on 9 countries namely: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam since I am already from the Philippines. That dream, I think, will need me at least 9 years or that is one country every year. But travel strategies in hitting two birds with is feasible, ASEAN countries are interconnected by land (bus or train), water and air (with more budget airlines). I am able to visit all the member states in 3 years. ;-)

It was in the year 2014 when I started chasing that dream. A trip to Singapore and Malaysia, touring a family made my first steps for the quest, then, a birth anniversary trip to Vietnam and Cambodia. Then, in 2015, I said hello to Indonesia. On the same year, I went to Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia and from there to Brunei Darussalam as a birth anniversary trip. Last in the list, a tri-country birth anniversary trip to Thailand, Laos and Myanmar. Oh yes, I completed it!!! My remembrance in each visit is a ref magnet. ;-)

I may not be that kind of a traveler who really immerse myself to a country for weeks. I usually visit other countries for 2 to 3 days only, prioritizing to visit major landmark and taste of their food. :-)

I am a budget traveler; every travel is short and tickets are purchased months before the flight availing seat sale. I can also say, as per my experience, that travel to other countries is even cheaper than traveling domestically in the Philippines. I will definitely share those stories here in my avenue. ;-)

For now, I am satisfied with my travel ambitions. My itchy feet are well spoiled. Lol

My next target is to at least complete the countries in East Asia. But, most of the countries there will need visa. We will see what will happen. ;-)

Thank you for visiting my avenue, I hope you enjoyed.

Travel | Kadayawan sa Dabaw 2016

Kadayawan sa Dabaw 2016
Kadayawan sa Davao is on its 31st celebration in Davao City. Yes, the most festive and colorful festival in Davao City is again in celebration of abundance and culture of people residing the city. The ten (10) tribes of Davao City is to be remembered during this celebration and thanksgiving of abundant harvest is what Kadayawan essentially is about. Originally, this celebration is called APODUWALING, in which, the celebration emphasizes the royalties of Davao: King of all mountains in the Philippines - Mt. Apo; King of all fruits in the Philippines - Durian; and Queen of all flowers in the Philippines - Waling-waling. Now, it is known the Kadayawan which has gotten its name from the Mandaya term for beautiful, which is, "madayaw". This is a very beautiful celebration of life! Since, in Davao City: Life is Here!

Anyways, it might be one in your bucket list to celebrate Kadayawan sa Dabaw. This is always a week-long celebration every 3rd week of August. This year's celebration will be on August 15-21, 2016. Travel Tip | Search for a Travel Expo

Participating East Asian countries
Travelers flocking great deals
A lot of Filipinos now have the chance of flying anywhere in the country and even international. Every year, many travel expositions are organized by different travel agencies in the country to provide various options to travel locally and internationally. It may be one of the things in your bucketlist - to travel - visiting a travel expo will surely help a lot.

The Travel Madness Expo 2016 is a jam packed travel expo. You will see a lot of participating countries and travel agencies luring you with their promos and other enticing packages. East Asian countries are among the top of my list to visit. Why? A ticket going there will be a burden for a budget traveler like me. Yes, my standard for a low fare to East Asian countries will be less than P 5,000 roundtrip. Yes, you read right. Most one way ticket going to those countries are more than P 5,000 one way on regular price and above P 5,000 for roundtrip discounted airfare price. Lucky enough if I catch something below P 5,000 roundtrip ticket, which I often get. Lol
