News | Globe calls for better coordination to address cable clean up in Davao City

Globe expressed its support for the Davao City Government’s ongoing cleanup of overhead cables, being implemented under Ordinance No. 0354-23, also known as the Anti-Spaghetti Wire Ordinance of 2023.

Passed in December 2023, the ordinance aims to improve public safety and urban order by requiring service providers to relocate their installations to designated poles and reduce cable clustering in public spaces. Full implementation began this year.

As the cleanup progresses, Globe shared the challenges that arise from receiving notifications only a few days before scheduled clearing activities—a timeline that makes it difficult for technical teams to adjust and properly inform affected customers.

“We are one with the Davao LGU in working toward safer, more resilient communities,” Adonis Evangelista, Globe Customer Field Services Head for Visayas and Mindanao, said. “At the same time, we hope for better coordination among all stakeholders involved, so that any disruption to essential services—like internet connectivity—can be minimized.”

Globe explained that the clearing operations can impact customers who rely on these services every day.

“We need time to notify our customers when their service may be interrupted, and to set expectations on restoration timelines,” Evangelista added. “While repairs typically take 24 to 48 hours, we will start restoration operations once clearing operations are done.”

Phase 2 of clearing operations is scheduled to commence on June 7, 2025, in the following areas:

●       Bonifacio Street

●       Rizal Street

●       Padre Gomez Street

●       Mabini Street

●       Artiaga Street

●       Faura Street

●       A. Quezon Street

●       Portions of Boulevard

●       Portions of Roxas

Globe emphasized its willingness to work closely with the LGU and all parties involved to reduce the impact on customers and help implement the ordinance more smoothly. The company has also committed to continuing real-time SMS alerts to affected customers and addressing service concerns as quickly as possible.

“This is beyond Globe’s control, but we want our customers to know we’re doing everything we can to manage the situation and restore service quickly,” Evangelista said. “We will continue to collaborate with the LGU and fellow providers to find a more coordinated approach that supports the city’s goals while protecting connectivity for Davao residents.”

Globe leads telecom innovation with first ever Private 5G SA Network in PH

Globe, in partnership with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), has successfully showcased the first-ever Private 5G Standalone (5G SA) Network in the country. Built with technology from Athonet, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company, the network delivers cellular connectivity to enterprises and organizations as an alternative or complementary solution to Wi-Fi and public mobile technologies.

The strength and scalability of the Athonet 5G Core was demonstrated at the recent INNOVANIA: Technology and Innovation Day, a tech fiesta that featured a myriad of digital solutions.

Athonet’s 5G SA Starter Kit is an easy-to-use, all-in-one package, including SIM cards, a radio, and a top-rated mobile core network in a briefcase. It offers high-quality video and audio, with download speeds of up to 780 Mbps and upload speeds up to 150 Mbps. The kit is a plug-and-play Private 5G SA Network powered by a standard outlet and is designed to work seamlessly with business applications through its N6 interface.

A private 5G SA network provides unique advantages for entities, including enhanced security, customization, ultra-low latency, and high capacity. It can handle massive Internet of Things (IoT) deployments and is particularly beneficial for mission-critical applications.

"The breakthrough Private 5G Standalone Network brings us closer to a digitally transformed enterprise landscape," said Yoke Kong Seow, Chief Technical Advisor at Globe.

"5G offers a lot of surprising use cases. Exploring it and doing customer pilot deployment will bring meaningful results and opportunities. This successful demonstration of the first Private 5G SA Network heralds another innovation for our enterprise customers to experience," he added.

The partnership with HPE offers flexibility in building the Private 5G network. Enterprises can choose to host the solution in the cloud, acquire a complete solution including HPE edge servers and Athonet software, or just license the software to integrate into existing infrastructure. They can also customize their own kit for specific coverage and capacity requirements as use cases and business requirements grow.

Loh Khai Peng, Vice President, APAC Sales at HPE, said, “With our Athonet technology, we are enabling a new era of connectivity for businesses. HPE is proud to partner with Globe on this groundbreaking endeavor, providing solutions that are not only tailored for specific needs but are also scalable, secure, and highly reliable.”

With Globe's commitment to digital transformation and the successful showcase of the Private 5G SA Network, the future of Philippine businesses is being redefined, ushering in an age of increased productivity, cost efficiency, and quality.

5 Days to Reactivate SIM after Deactivation

If you still missed the SIM registration deadline, you have a final grace period to comply with the law.

Globe, TM, and Globe At Home Prepaid WiFi users who missed the July 25 deadline for SIM registration will already feel the impact of non-compliance, with their outgoing services and incoming calls deactivated.

But, as stipulated in the implementing rules and regulations of the SIM Registration Act, they still have five days- from July 26 to 30–  to catch up and save their SIM from permanent deactivation. Their incoming SMS is still left active so they could receive a One-Time Pin for SIM registration.

"Globe recognizes the essential role of uninterrupted mobile and broadband services in our customers' daily lives. So, as provided for in the law, SIM users get this last chance to register their SIMs after missing the initial and extended registration deadlines. Our team is committed to assisting our customers who need help. We strongly urge everyone to seize this opportunity to avoid any inconvenience," said Ernest Cu, Globe Group President and CEO.

To reactivate your SIMs and restore full mobile services, customers have to connect to a WiFi network and complete their SIM registration via Globe's dedicated platform at https://new.globe.com.ph/simreg or through the GlobeOne app. Globe Stores and EasyHubs are also open to assist walk-in customers who need assistance. Reactivation of full mobile services will happen within 24 hours following.

Failure to reactivate during this five-day grace period will lead to permanent SIM deactivation. As a consequence, all services, including incoming and outgoing text messages, calls, and mobile data connectivity will no longer be available. This may also impact access to active mobile applications, including banking, transport and other apps crucial for daily needs.

Starting July 31, 2023, all remaining load balances and promo registrations on unregistered SIMs will also be forfeited. Those with deactivated SIMs who need mobile services will have to purchase new SIMs, which will then also have to be registered to activate.

The SIM registration grace period is the final opportunity for customers to register their SIMs and secure their mobile services. Globe, TM, and Globe At Home Prepaid WiFi customers are encouraged to act swiftly to avoid the consequences of permanent deactivation.

Customers are reminded that SIM registration is an integral part of the broader initiative to strengthen customer security and prevent fraud. Completing this step is necessary not only to retain their mobile services but to ensure their digital safety.

News | Globe optimizing SIM Registration portal for better customer experience

December 27, Tuesday, in compliance with the law but had to make the site temporarily inaccessible to ensure a better registration experience for customers.

Several customers were able to access the site and register between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. but the portal temporarily went offline as the site is being optimized. Globe aims to have the online platform back up within the day.

“We would like to thank our customers for going in to register early. Technical teams are working double time so the online platform can go live before the day ends. Rest assured that we are optimizing our systems to give you a better registration experience. We’d also like to remind our customers that there is enough time to register,” said Yoly Crisanto, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications of the Globe Group.

All Globe Prepaid, TM, Globe At Home Prepaid WiFi, Globe Mobile WiFi and Globe Business prepaid customers have until April 26, 2023 to register. Registration via the Globe One app will begin by January 2023, while on-site assisted registration will start in February 2023 for Globe customers facing challenges using digital or online platforms, using feature or basic phones, or have no internet access.

Globe has been preparing for the implementation of the SIM Registration Law but had to recalibrate its system within just 15 days given the release of new guidelines under the implementing rules and regulations (IRR), including the verification step through a selfie. The IRR was released on December 12, 2022.

“We ask our customers for their understanding as we experience these birth pains given this massive deployment of software. We’re setting the stage for our customers to have a good digital experience,” Crisanto said.

Meanwhile, data and information of existing Globe Postpaid, Globe Platinum, and Globe Business postpaid customers’ are already included in the Globe registration platform. Globe shall get in touch with these customers to confirm and complete their registration details to ensure customer information is aligned with the requirements of the law.

The SIM Registration Act is a major step in the fight against fraudsters who use anonymous SIM cards for illegal activities. This gives customers an extra layer of security and protection.

The law also complements Globe's ongoing efforts to combat fraud, like investing in filtering systems, proactively blocking scam and spam SMS, and partnering with banks and other financial institutions to share data.

Cebu, Davao cities among highest Globe 5G traffic in PH

5G adoption is fast spreading in other parts of the country with the cities of Cebu and Davao having the most number of Globe 5G users outside Metro Manila for the first half of 2022.

For Visayas, Cebu City ranked the highest, followed by Lapu-Lapu City and Mandaue City. On the other hand, Davao City led in Mindanao with Cagayan de Oro City placing second.

“Faster download speeds, lower latency, higher capacity, and overall superior performance are among the compelling reasons why consumers are shifting to 5G. We are confident that with the progress we are making on our 5G rollouts, we can further boost user experience in Visayas and Mindanao,” said Patrick Gloria, Director for External Affairs, Visayas and Mindanao and Regional Lead for the Globe Visayas Leadership Team.

As of the first semester, Globe’s 5G network has reached 85.8% of key cities in Visayas and Mindanao in terms of 5G outdoor coverage and 96.6% in Metro Manila.

Globe logged around 2.7 million devices in its 5G network as of end-June. It expects the figure to continuously go up as 5G devices become more affordable.

A report released by consumer intelligence company Standard Insights at the start of the year showed that 86.26 percent of the respondents in the Visayas are interested in getting a 5G device while 10.75 percent already have one. For Mindanao, 81.56 percent are interested, while 16.48 percent own a 5G device.

Globe’s 5G expansion is in line with the company’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 9, which highlights the roles of infrastructure and innovation as crucial drivers of economic growth and development.

The company offers several entry-level and mid-range 5G phone models for free when subscribed to a postpaid plan to enable more Filipinos to access this new technology. The phones may also be bought separately from Globe Stores at discounted prices when bundled with a SIM-only plan.

Event | Globe Reacts on PH SIM Registration Bill

The SIM registration bill was proposed few years ago but it has not gotten into a law because of some provisions that will affect on matters about privacy. Here's a developing story of the SIM registration bill in the Philippines with Globe, one of the country's telco giants, giving some proposals to iron out the said bill.

Here's the story:

---

Globe welcomes progress on SIM registration bills, seeks inclusion of proposed amendments

Globe, the leader in mobile, welcomes the progress of bills in the Senate and the House of Representatives that mandate SIM registration for mobile phone users as a crucial step in addressing criminal activity aided by electronic communications.

As in the previous Congress, Globe is consistent in supporting the SIM Registration bills pending both in the House and the Senate.

"We reiterate our support for legislation that would require all mobile phone users to register, as this will serve as a deterrent against criminality enabled by the anonymity that the status quo affords prepaid SIM users," says Froilan Castelo, Globe Group General Counsel.

Globe believes that this will reduce spam and scam SMS, which have been escalating in various modes and methods in recent months.

Globe, however, hopes that its proposals to the bills will be considered and incorporated.

"One, there is a need for an authentic, verifiable source document that establishes a SIM holder’s identity. This is necessary given the ubiquity of fake IDs," Castelo adds. “It will also help if mobile phone operators can have access to the National ID system in order to verify the ID submitted by the subscriber.”

Having a source document for all IDs will help us in cross-checking the authenticity of IDs presented upon SIM registration. One proposed source document could be the National ID database.

Globe also requests for an amendment to a provision that requires telcos to keep SIM registration data for a period of 10 years from deactivation.

"We propose that the bill instead mandate telcos to store historical data on registered prepaid SIM owners given that mobile numbers, being a finite combination of digits, are recycled and may be assigned to different users in varied periods of time," says Castelo.

This is especially true in the case of prepaid SIM users who are known to frequently change their numbers. The data retention period of 10 years will only be appropriate for registered postpaid SIMs.

We look forward to our continued collaboration and close coordination with the government towards the final passage and rational implementation of the SIM Registration bill.

We are certain that this legislation will make a dent on the currently thriving trade of fraudsters, who are an escalating threat to our customers and our business, and a growing burden to law enforcement and regulators.
