Ata Tribal Representative

The Kadayawan Tribal Village at the Magsaysay Park is one of the most highlighted venues during the Kadayawan sa Davao. It showcases the eleven (11) ethno-linguistic tribes of the city. The following ethno-linguistic tribes are: Ata, Iranun, Kagan, Klata, Maguindanaon, Maranao, Matigsalog, Obu-Manuvo, Sama, Tagabawa, and Taosug. These tribes are still at some prominent points of the city especially at some mountainous areas while some are the lowland areas. This village shows how the living in their tribes look like with display of houses (authentic tribal houses), tribal products, tribal designs and customary traditions.

Tribal Village

At the entrance of the tribal village, there are assigned members of each tribe each day to give greetings and information to the guests. It is pretty interesting that there's a number of guests, either local or foreign tourists, who visit the village to witness it in person and experience a bit of the tribal living. It is a really a place of cultural heritage with harmonious relationship that helps drive growth in the city.

This village is often available during the Kadayawan sa Davao and this will always be part of every Kadayawan sa Davao as the festival is a celebration of bounty, culture and beauty of the city.

Along side the Kadayawan Tribal Village is a one day event of Mugna (doodling) sa Kadayawan.

This is event showcases the artistry of many young Dabawenyos. There are two categories for this doodling competition, the professional and student category. There is a number of participants for the event and you will really appreciate great creative talents.

The usual elements you will see with their creations are the people of Davao, the Philippine Eagle, Mt. Apo, Waling-waling, durian and other landmarks of the city.

It is such an honor to witness such events. It is a way to remember the city's pride culture and heritage marks - the people and its traditions. It is also a way to showcase creativity among artists and hopefully it will bloom to show the whole world of artists from this southern region of the Philippines.

My mother and I have a great bonding in one of the world's biggest 3D painting gallery in the Philippines. The whole space has been used much and maximized for such art entertainment. It is a tourist destination for fun interaction with the humongous artworks!

Art in Island at the Heart of the Metro

Somewhere in the northern part of Metro Manila where this gallery is situated. You really need to have an imaginative mind to play around the images as the artworks are more than a human size, well-lit and plays with your cameras. Be sure to bring along a relative or friends because selfie-ing is a big NO interacting with the images. You can't capture the whole view unless you will settle with a tripod positioned on suggested points in the gallery. LOL

A registration fee has to be paid at the entrance area. There is a map guide going inside. It is prohibited wearing footwear aside from socks inside. I advise you to wear socks as much as possible since the floor will be uncomfortably cool.

The gallery is divided into zones. There are five (5) zones namely: aqua zone, animal zone, masterpiece zone, religion zone and fantasy zone. Aside from these zones, there are special areas too such as season's area and the central hall which a very big room of artwork!

It is really a cool (literally and figuratively) place to bond with relatives or friends. Just a bit pricy though yet the visit is very worthy every zone, actually priceless! The artworks are really magnificent! A fun place to be at especially to people who love to capture moments with the artworks.

However, there are concerns I have in the gallery. Will the artworks last forever? Will the same glow of the artworks remain year after year? Should the artists who created the gallery do frequent maintenance efforts? Well, I know they know what to do. :-)

Pahiyas Festival of Lucban, Quezon Province

San Isidro Labrador Feast

The Philippines is a country with a lot of festivities, mostly that are related to patron saints. The month of May is the most celebrated month in many parts of the country as many farmers celebrate the Feast of San Isidro Labrador, who is known to be the patron for good harvest. This is a familiar feast in the country as many of the rural areas or provinces are engaging in agricultural activities. This is a also way to show gratitude due a bountiful harvest amidst the production challenges due to dry spell or worse El Nino phenomenon.

It is in my bucket list to visit Quezon Province and see the colorful and vibrant Pahiyas Festival of Lucban, Quezon. It is known to be a celebration wherein many participating houses decorate their place with hanged fruits, vegetables and colorful agricultural products/ornaments. Aside from that, it is a place where I want to experience and taste the very famous pancit habhab, and the kiping - this is made of ground rice, dyed and molded on big leaves - it is cooked and it can be eaten, yet I liked it fried. :-)

Artworks at Davao International Airport

Yaman Kayamanan

I have fascination on artworks wherever it is installed or situated. It portrays a deep sense of human's soul and imagination put into a multimedia or any form of visual art.

At Davao International Airport, I noticed a painting at the hallway going towards the airport gates 6 to 8. The artwork project that is entitled "Yaman Kayamanan"  conceptualized and organized by Kublai Milan - one of Mindanao's best visual artists. The artwork is a compilation of 18 images with the participation of different artists, namely: Anton Candayona III, Nina Custodio, Boboy Buenaventura, Jeff Bangot, Victor Dumaguing, Kublai Milan, Jun Cayas, Jon Traya, Rosamond Alejar and Stella Estremera. This project is supported by the Department of Tourism through Assistant Secretary Art Boncato and the Alex Montanez of APM Group of Companies.

Mindanao is culturally and environmentally rich that this artwork wants to depict. It shows people of Mindanao and a simple way of living and practices. It also shows the gift of nature from its vast lands and seas. This mural painting is said to be a gift of the people from Mindanao especially by Dabawenyos to the people of this country and the rest of the world to celebrate abundance.

This artwork will help a lot in the promotion that Mindanao is a great island and not a battlefield. It will show to the world that there is a loud outcry that there are people existing in peace in this side of the country.
